Artist in costumes

After doing much research from fashion websites such as www.asos.com topman and river island. We have found possible outfits that our artist will wear during the music video. The artists costume must be specific to the genre. Thats why with our artist we have made sure he wears everyday clothes that any other man his age would wear, this is because the indie genre isn't about the image its all about the music especially with our sub genre of the acoustic indie genre where its all about the music being natural.
Therefore with our research these are some of the fashion ideas we have come up with:

Prop ideas

Props.
As with costume we think that all props and locations should be very normal. The only thing out of the ordinary prop wise for our music video is that of the instrument used in our music video  which is going to be an acoustic guitar. this is key to the acoustic indie genre as this prop will help symbolise our genre .
This will be a key part of our video as we aim to have many close ups on the instrument to show instrumentation. This will therefore show that the artist can play the instrument to show another convention of the indie genre of the artist being talented being able to sing and play an instrument at the same time.

Another prop that we were thinking of using was that of a females handbag. This will be in most scenes due to the fact it is an every day item of a woman of the age of our character in the music video. It represents the character as being a stereotypical female, who would be involved in the situations going on in the narrative. The artist will also have a bag (a messenger bag) this will be used in scenes when the male artist is on his own. This will symbolise that the male artist has to carry his own weight now he's not with her.
A prop that will also be used is a bed because one of our scenes will be in a bedroom. This will be used when the artist is lying on his bed on his own. We want to show him lying on his own to represent that the artist is no longer with the female character in the video.
Another piece of furniture that we will be using as a prop is a bench. The bench will be used as the climax of the video when the artist will finally see that his passed lover has moved on. So this prop is key to our narrative as it will symbolise the end of relationship.
List of other minor props:
Coffees
leaves
swings

Lyrics

Mike dignam-I'll lie here

You can rest your head upon my chest
I feel warmer with you there
Go to sleep my love I’ll watch over us
Drift to a peaceful place there’s no rush for you to wake

With your eyes closed and me as your pillow
It feels as though you were made to fit with me

Through your gentle breath I exhale my stress
I know I’ve found contentment in these sheets

You’re the escape from my daily routine
The calm in my storm you comfort me

So I’ll lie here
So I’ll lie here

If I could describe this moment
A unique feeling knowing
Although my hearts been broken
Wounds from others are closing

You whisper my name when you begin to wake
It’s the sweetest sound, reminding me that

You’re the escape from my daily routine
The calm in my storm you comfort me
 So I’ll lie here
I’ll lie here

If could change the weather I’d make it rain
So we could take shelter in this place,

Feeling your heartbeat is all I need

You’re the escape from my daily routine
The calm in my storm you comfort me

You’re the escape from my daily routine
The calm in my storm you comfort me

So I’ll lie here
I’ll lie here
I’ll lie here
I’ll lie here

With you

planning of the music video

Development of Planning for the Video

Its clear through research and analysis of different videos, that certain shots, editing and types of mise-en-scene would suit our video perfectly. One of the ideas that came through recently was split screening, have the artist telling the story on one side and having the protagonist and the narrative on the other side. This has been used in a number of indie videos and they all use narrative as well.

Another idea is to contrast Urban and Natural, by reflecting his feelings and the mood of the song. This is used in Jason Mraz's- I'm yours and it works well in showing the bad and good things in his life (Binary Opposition).

Another idea that we have come up with for our video is a 'God figure', this has also been used in a number of genres and a countless number of videos. Daniel Powters 'Bad Day' is an example where the artist plays a godly figure and narrates the story. 'Divine intervention' is also a possibility as it would mean the godly figure has a part to play in the story and not just a narrative role. The 'godly figure' also works well with the split-screen as seen in the 'Bad Day' video.

costume ideas

We intend for our indie artist to wear clothes that you can imagine the every day man of someone his age who you could imagine having a guitar in his hand. We aim to do this because this will give the effect that the artist is no different to the audience and that the video is just about the music, which is important to us because it being all about the music is a key convention of the indie genre.

We have been looking at looks for our artist with the use of google images sites such as asos.com topman.com and other fashion websites. These sites have lead us to think that brogues, dark jeans and jackets are all popular indie looks.

Split screen idea

Another idea that my group and I came up with from researching music videos, was the split screen idea. This involves a split screen throughout the video seeing a number of different perspectives, this may include shots of the location the narrative is based on or where the music video was filmed, personal views from the characters and for example, if a band performance, the camera identifies various views of the instruments used. The split screen is an effective technique to use as it provides the listener with a better view and understanding of the music video or narrative. I think this technique would suit our song choice as our song is about a love narrative, therefore the split screen could show the personal views from both the male and female in the relationship and what the after effects of the possible break up are.
Below show two examples where the split screen technique in music videos are used:

Michael Jackson's music video for 'Billie Jean' demonstrates a very simple but effective split screen approach by subtly using, for example lamposts to divide the scenes up in relation to the narrative. Although his genre isn't similar to our chosen song, the video identifies another way we could go about this idea. For instance we could find a lampost in a park and show both the sides of the story of the male and the female.

Ideas

Our group decided to pitch our song to a Focus Group where in return they wrote down there thoughts, ideas and reactions to our song, which we can turn into ideas for our Music Video.

One of the main features that many of our focus group members brought up was the theme of a Love Story including: Boy and Girl, Relationship, Romance, Young Love and Break-Up. This leads us to believe that a key convention of our Music Video and Genre will be Lost Love.

Our Location will be an 'all natural' location as the majority of our Audience said that it would be best in a: field, river, beach, forest and include natural lighting and filters such as the sunrise and moonlight. An idea of rain was also brought forward to enhance the fact the song is sad but the nature element is till there.

A convention we thought up in our original planning was that of 'flashbacks' or looking back to the couples memories together, the focus group also thought this up, without the influence of us, which increases our ambition to use this element in our music video.

The Mise-En-Scene of our Video will include a scruffy casual look from the Artists and a guitar will also be present throughout to bring the music and talent of the Artist to the audience.

Micro element

Performance/Lip Syncing

From looking at many acoustic indie videos i have realised that a key part of a video is the performance side of an act. I think this shows that the music is partly about being talented because in performance it shows that the artist can perform a musical instrument and truely sing. This is sometimes shown by a close up on the artist playing the instrument showing instrumentation.

Another micro element thats is used only partly due to most indie acoustic videos being partly narrative is the micro element of Lip Syncing the artist is clearly shown singing because of close up on the artist singing during the performance. For example in lego house by Ed Sheeran even though its not the artist.

Micro-element

Narrative

One micro-element of indie music is a narrative in this slide share it shows some key aspects of a narrative in a music video
